A brace from Harry Leonard helped Rovers Under-21s finally get off the mark in Premier League 2 Division 1 following an excellent 3-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur Under-21s on Saturday.

Leonard, who scored against Brentford B in the Premier League Cup last time out, continued his fine form in front of goal when he fired home a second-half brace to put Rovers into a 3-0 lead following Jared Harlock's early opener.

Despite Harvey White pulling a goal back for Wayne Burnett's hosts, that was to prove the only blot on the copybook for Rovers, who rose off the foot of the table with victory.

Mike Sheron's side had a more senior look to it in north London, with Joe Rankin-Costello, Adam Wharton, Sam Szmodics and ex-Spurs man Dilan Markanday all starting.

Rovers got off to the dream start at the Spurs academy base when the visitors went in front inside the opening two minutes. Szmodics was the architect, with the attacking midfielder sending Harlock through to calmly slide a low shot past Aaron Maguire.

That was enough for Rovers to take a slender advantage into the interval, although there was a hint of fortune with Jamie Donley, Romaine Mundle and White passing up opportunities to equalise through poor finishing and fine goalkeeping by the recalled Jordan Eastham.

Leonard ultimately showed Spurs how it was done with two goals in the space of five minutes just after the hour, beating Maguire with a fine finish for his first before doubling his tally after the home stopper parried a Szmodics strike into his path.

There was to be a Spurs goal, which was probably fair on the balance of the chances, with White firing home Matthew Craig's left-wing cross, but it was too little, too late for Tottenham, who remain winless after six games played.

Rovers return to Premier League Cup action at Peterborough United on Thursday 22nd September, kick-off 7pm at the Zeeco Stadium, Stamford.
