Dominic Samuel hit a hat-trick as Billy Barr's Development Squad returned to winning ways on home turf with a comprehensive victory over Tottenham Hotspur's Under-23s at Leyland.

A Samuel double set the hosts on their way, with his brace coming either side of the interval, before Stefan Mols slammed home midway through the second half.

There was still time for Samuel to complete his treble late on as he lashed home a volley that flew over the line despite the best efforts of Brandon Austin.

Barr made two changes to his team from the clash against Everton a week earlier, with Lewis Thompson and Samuel coming in for Sam Hart and Harry Chapman.

Rovers began well and Joe Rankin-Costello forced Austin into a brave stop to beat away the midfielder's stinging drive.

But the next opportunity saw the hosts take the lead as an inswinging corner was flicked on by Sam Barnes and Samuel was there to touch home from a couple of yards out.

Soon after and an excellent Joe Grayson free kick was nodded inches past the post by the lively Rankin-Costello at the back post.

Spurs improved after the break, with Joe Hilton forced into decent stops from Phoenix Patterson and then visiting skipper Jamie Bowden in the opening 10 minutes of the second half.

But it was Rovers who scored next to double their advantage, in excellent style. Samuel's brilliant touch got Brad Lyons' ball under his spell, which took Austin out of the game and it was a simple tap in for the striker.

The impressive Mols made the game safe with 21 minutes remaining as he rifled home from inside the box after a neat one-two with Jack Vale.

Mols almost added a fourth a minute later as he cut in from the right before bending a shot just beyond Austin's right-hand post.

But Samuel did make it four with seven minutes left as he produced a fabulous finish to thump home a volley from Mols' cross which was too strong for Austin.

That rounded off a night to remember for Barr, who earned a first home league victory in style in the rain at Leyland.
