A Chanka Zimba brace did the damage as Rovers Under-18s ended Manchester City Under-18s' 100% winning record in the U18s Premier League.
Overseen by Mike Sheron, the Rovers youngsters produced an excellent display both going forward and defensively to earn a home victory against the high-flying visitors.
And speaking afterwards, Sheron was thrilled with the display from his side, and was particularly pleased with the discipline shown from his charges.
“It was a shock, but I felt we were competitive, disciplined and committed and it was a good performance," Sheron said with a smile.
“I was delighted with both the performance and the result. The boys did very well.
“I was delighted with the group for their discipline. The week before had seen City go 2-0 down to Liverpool before roaring back to win 5-2.
“That was the warning at half time to the lads. We had a good 45 minutes and provided that again in the second half," he added.
“The challenge for us now is to try and do that again against Chelsea this weekend, which won’t be easy.
“Chanka’s had a tough time, he knows that. We’ve tried to encourage him to be more aggressive and positive, and I felt he showed those qualities at the weekend, so he’s got his reward for that.
“Hopefully he can carry on the form.
“Sometimes teenagers get a bit complacent after a good performance, but hopefully we can keep going, keep moving forward."
