LSC preview: Rovers v Accrington Stanley

A look ahead to tonight's round one tie

10 September 2019

Rovers begin their defence of the Lancashire Senior Cup when they take on Accrington Stanley later tonight.

The clash, which takes place at Leyland, will see the two sides lock horns once again, as they did at the semi-finals stage of the competition last season, with Rovers winning the penalty shootout.

It was a last gasp Lewis Thompson strike that forced that tie to spot kicks, and the left back is one player who will be unavailable for tonight's game.

The youngster, who has featured regularly so far for the Under-23s this term, is away on international duty with Northern Ireland's Under-21s side, and therefore will not play a part against Stanley.

Another international call up in Jack Vale could also miss out, but not because he is represneting his country. The forward picked up a niggle after being called up to the Wales Under-21s squad, and it remains to be seen whether this evening's gae will come too soon for the Wrexham-born attacker.

Vale, who scored in the Final against Burnley last season, isn't expected to be the only absentee from that victory against The Clarets.

Tyler Magloire was skipped on the night, and the defender's loan stint with Rochdale rules him out, whilst Andy Fisher's temporary switch to Northampton Town sees the goalkeeper miss out.

Dan Butterworth remains sidelined with a leg injury, whilst John Buckley and Joe Rankin-Costello both look to now be a part of the first team plans, but Tom White could make his debut in the competition having arrived from Gateshead in the summer.

It's expected that the 22-year-old will join Brad Lyons in midfield, whilst it remains to be seen whether Dominic Samuel and Harry Chapman will continue their run in the Under-23s side having both scored against Brighton & Hove Albion last time out in Premier League 2.
