Rovers Ladies manager Gemma Donnelly is relishing the chance to play in the Continental Cup for the first time on Sunday.

Having stepped up to the second tier, the Blues waved goodbye to playing in the National League Cup – a competition they won in 2017-18 and retained the following season.

Now they have the chance to test themselves against clubs in the top two divisions.

“Given that it’s our first season in the Championship we’re excited to experience the Continental Cup and what it brings,” Donnelly said in her pre-match presser.

“We have Liverpool in the group that we wouldn’t normally play in the league so for that reason, it’s good to entertain new opposition.

“I guess as a cup competition, it allows you almost to experiment and do things that you might not ordinarily try in the league.

“The Conti Cup is going to be an opportunity to offer match time to squad players and enjoy the whole cup experience.”

Donnelly’s charges travel to face Coventry United for the opening Group Stage fixture. Rovers triumphed 3-0 when the two teams last met in the Championship play off final back in May.

But the Rovers boss believes that will count for nothing come 2pm on Sunday afternoon.

“We may have beaten them several months ago but it doesn’t mean anything.

“Every team in the Championship has strengthened. Whether that be in their playing quality or extending training days or nights.

“So until you actually play a team and gauge what they have to offer I don’t think past encounters are a fair reflection of their capability.

“We’ll go into this game well researched. We’ve had a fantastic training week - probably our best to date – so we’re starting to nail down some good competition amongst the players.

“We hope to offer some more minutes to Tash Flint this weekend and I know everyone that is involved will want to offer a fantastic display.

“Not only themselves, but of course for the team, as we search for our first win and try to get some points in the Group Stage of the Conti Cup.”
