BTEC boys head to Bulgarian capital

Rovers will be back in the Bulgarian capital competing alongside community organisations from all around Europe

15 September 2019

It'll be 16 years on from a memorable UEFA Cup tie in Sofia, and Rovers will be back in the Bulgarian capital competing alongside community organisations from all around Europe.

The Sofia European Capital of Sport Foundation and Sofia Municipality organize the Sofia Urban Zone Sport 2019. Between today (Sunday 15th) and Sunday 22nd September representatives from 12 countries will take part in the sporting festival.

Competitions, demonstrations and show acts accompanied with music, dances and urban culture will make the centre of Sofia a colourful sport arena for a period of eight days. With 14 sports and a total of over 20 activities and workshops, the Bulgarian capital will really be a sporting hub.

Activities such as acrobatics, basketball, yoga, arm wrestling, karate, stunt, mini football, orienteering, parkour and street fitness, sport climbing, street dances, taekwondo, folk fest and urban sports will be showcased during the festival.

Tuesday and Wednesday is when the real work will begin for the boys who will take to the pitches of the impressive Borisova Garden as the football tournament takes place.

Rovers will go head-to-head with clubs from 12 other countries hoping to follow in the footsteps of the Rovers first-team 16 years previous.

The opportunity to go and play in Sofia has come about due to the Trust's worthwhile network with the EFDN who invited the Trust to represent England at the competition.

Education & Sports Tutor Andrew Eminson-Smith says it's a fantastic opportunity to be a part of something abroad.

"We can't wait to get out there," he said.

"It's a fantastic opportunity to showcase some of our best players at the Sports College. We can't thank the EFDN network enough for giving us a brilliant platform to perform on."

The group travel out to Sofia on Sunday and we will have extensive coverage of the trip on the Community Trust's social media platforms.
