Danielle Whitham says she simply couldn’t turn the chance to return to Rovers.

She lifted the National League Northern Premier Division trophy during her one season at the club, which came back in 2016-17.

And is now looking forward to resuming her Rovers career in the Championship.

“I’m really excited to get going,” Whitham beamed after making her return.

“Rovers has always had a big place in my heart so I’m just glad to be back. I’ve missed the professionalism of the club.

“I just knew that nothing was going to match the season I had before I left.

“It was the best season of my career so hopefully we can push on from that and keep having better and better seasons with the club.”

The Championship will also be a new experience for Whitham, who has spent most of her career in the third and fourth tiers, playing for the likes of Bradford City, Huddersfield Town, Leeds United and Barnsley.

“It’s a good challenge. The club has needed to be there for a few seasons now so I’m excited to be playing in this league with this club.

“We want to start picking up some points and doing well and show that we deserve to be here.”

Whitham comes back into familiar surroundings having enjoyed a title-winning campaign under the stewardship of Gemma Donnelly in 2016-17.

A host of players from that season are still at the club, including Danielle Hill, Ellie Stewart, Kayleigh McDonald, Alex Taylor, Jess Holbrook, Natasha Fenton and Saffron Jordan.

“It’s nice to see familiar faces, they know what it’s like to win as well.

“We hated losing when we played a few seasons ago so I’m sure they’ll still have that mentality.

“I’m a very enthusiastic player and play with a lot of passion so hopefully I can boost the team to win more games.”
