Rovers defender Derrick Williams has been called up by the Republic of Ireland, as team-mates Darragh Lenihan and Greg Cunningham are withdrawn from the squad.
Lenihan and Cunningham picked up knee injuries during Rovers’ 4-2 defeat to QPR and will now miss the Euro 2020 qualifiers against Georgia in Tbilisi (Saturday October 12th) and Switzerland in Geneva (Tuesday October 15th).
After consultation with Mick McCarthy and the national team medical department, it was agreed that the defensive duo should be withdrawn from the squad, with both players to be sent for scans over the coming days.
It is Williams’ first call-up from new Republic of Ireland boss McCarthy, who told FAI.ie: “Derrick was in the extended 41-man squad for these games and playing regularly for Blackburn, so this is his chance now. He is looking forward to meeting up with us.”
Ireland currently sit top of Group C, with 11 points from their opening five group games, two points ahead of second-placed Denmark.
