Report: Queens Park Rangers 4-2 Rovers

It was a disappointing day for Rovers at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium

5 October 2019

It was an afternoon to forget for Rovers, who weren't at the races and were deservedly on the end of a beating at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium.

Although a Bradley Dack penalty and a late Adam Armstrong tap in got Rovers on the scoresheet, the home side hit four to earn a big victory on home soil.

Nahki Wells got the ball rolling for Rangers with a cam finish, before Ebe Eze doubled the advantage just after the break.

A Dack spot kick looked to have handed Rovers a lifeline, but Bright Osayi-Samuel made sure QPR were back in command just three minutes later.

Jordan Hugill's pinpoint header added another for the west Londoners, before Armstron reached his milestone in the final moments for his 50th career strike.

Corry Evans and Joe Rothwell were the two changes to the starting XI from the one that began against Nottingham Forest a few days earlier, with the injured Lewis Travis and Sam Gallagher dropping out.

Likewise, the hosts made a couple of changes themselves, with Hugill and Dominic Ball being replaced by Burnley loanee Wells and Yoann Barbet, who returned from suspension.

The home side had the first opportunity of the game, but Christian Walton was on hand to hold a tame effort from American midfielder Geoff Cameron.

Whilst Rovers were fortunate there, their luck was out soon after when Greg Cunningham was forced off with a knee injury after 17 minutes, with Amari'i Bell coming on for the Republic of Ireland international.

Chances were few and far between in the early stages, but it was the hosts who took the lead in simple circumstances just before the half hour mark.

A deep cross to the back post saw Bell beaten by Osayi-Samuel and Wells was there to take a touch and fire home from six yards out.

Rovers were struggling to create anything of note, and Osayi-Samuel blazed over after Bell did enough to hold up the lively Ilias Chair with half time looming.

The dangerous Wells glanced over in the final minute of the half as Rovers got in at the break fortunate to only find themselves a goal down going into the interval.

The boss wouldn't have been happy with what he witnessed in a shot-shy first half, and it was Danny Graham who was sacrificed at the break, with Lewis Holtby coming on for the experienced striker.

That switch led to the German lining up on the right of a front three behind Armstrong, who moved up top.

But it didn't pay off, with Eze winning the battle against Derrick Williams and slotting beyond Walton at the near post just three minutes into the second half.

Rovers did finally muster attempt in the 54th minute, but Williams was adjudged to be offside when he slid home from close range after Holtby's teasing low cross from the left.

Just a couple of minutes later and Rovers were handed a lifeline from the spot when Barbet went through the back of Bradley Dack in the box.

With no Graham on the pitch, Dack picked himself up to confidently stroke home from the spot and give Rovers hope of a comeback.

But it didn't last long as Mark Warburton's side regained their two-goal advantage just three minutes later through Osayi-Samuel.

A cross into the box found the wide man, and he turned Darragh Lenihan before seeing his shot squirm beyond Walton and into the far corner.

A fourth goal of the afternoon arrived with 14 minutes remaining as substitute Hugill rose highest to plant a header from a Ryan Manning cross to power beyond Walton and wrap up all three points for the home side.

Armstrong pulled a late consolation back with four minutes remaining, tucking home his 50th career goal on his 200th club career appearance following a good ball into a dangerous area from Elliott Bennett.

But it counted for little for the visitors, who returned home with nothing to show and will have the result lingering over the international break.
