Paul Downing’s hopes of reaching a Wembley final suffered a blow, as his Doncaster side lost 2-1 at home to Charlton Athletic on Sunday.

The Rovers defender has spent the second half of the season on loan at the Keepmoat Stadium, helping the League One side secure a top six finish.

Yesterday, they met a Charlton side who finished third in League One, in their play-off semi-final first leg.

The Addicks scored twice in as many minutes through Lyle Taylor and Joe Aribo just past the half-hour mark to hold a commanding 2-0 lead at the break.

However, Matty Blair halved the deficit in the 87th minute to give Doncaster hope of a comeback when the two teams meet again at The Valley on Friday night.

Downing, who started 17 games for Doncaster during the second half of the season, played the full 90 minutes at the Keepmoat Stadium and will hope to help Grant McCann’s men reach the Wembley showpiece, as he bids to secure a second straight promotion from League One.
