Rovers new boy Stewart Downing has spoken of his excitement at joining ‘a club on the up’ after sealing a move to Ewood Park.
The former Middlesbrough midfielder, who has 35 England caps to his name, has signed a one-year deal to become Rovers’ first recruit of the summer.
The 34-year-old, who has made over 400 Premier League appearances for the likes of Liverpool, Aston Villa and West Ham United, is now looking forward to the next chapter in his distinguished club career at Rovers, who he believes try to play football the right way under manager Tony Mowbray.
“It feels very good,” said Downing to iFollow Rovers, shortly after putting pen-to-paper.
“After discussing it with the manager, this was the only place I wanted to come.
“I just think it’s a club on the up. They got the promotion from League One and I think Tony’s done a really good job since he’s been here.
“Last season, they were probably a little bit unlucky. They could have finished a bit higher, with certain results, but he’s building a good team and I was excited about his plans for the future.
“He’s got some really good ideas, a good way of playing and I’m really excited. I’m glad it’s done quite early in pre-season as well.
“Playing against Blackburn Rovers over the years, it’s always been a really good football club, with good support.
“The manager obviously plays a big part in that, with the way he plays. I know some lads from Middlesbrough who know him and I like the way his teams play.
“Even last season, playing for Middlesbrough, we had two difficult games against Rovers and we were lucky to get a point out of one of them.
“He plays good football, it’s football I like to play and I’m really excited to get going.”
