Scott Wharton has today signed a new Rovers contract and joined League Two side Northampton Town on a season-long loan.
The 21-year-old, who has been with the club from a young age, has put pen-to-paper a new deal which will keep him at Ewood Park until the summer of 2022.
Wharton has subsequently agreed a loan switch to Sixfields, where he will remain for the 2019-20 season.
Rovers have given Northampton permission for the defender to play in the League Cup and Checkatrade Trophy.
After progressing through Rovers' youth ranks, Wharton has enjoyed several loan spells away from Ewood Park, spending time at Cambridge United, Lincoln City (twice) and Bury, who he helped secure promotion to League One last season.
A former captain of Rovers Under-23s, Wharton has made six appearances for the first team since making his debut in a 2-2 draw against Burton Albion at Ewood Park in August 2016.
