"If the young lads need someone to talk to about things and just want a bit of advice, I’ll be here for them.”
Stewart Downing has been there and done it in his career, but says he's excited by the challenge at Rovers to help both on and off the pitch.
One of the most experienced players in the squad, Downing has spent the majority of his career playing in the Premier League and has represented England on 35 occasions.
The winger, who can count the likes of Middlesbrough, Aston Villa, Liverpool and West Ham United as previous employers, is targeting a top six place in his upcoming first campaign at Ewood Park, and says he's willing to lend a helping hand to the youngsters in Tony Mowbray's squad.
“I think the play-offs is a realistic target for us here," he said when previewing the season.
“I was at Middlesbrough the last couple of years and that was our aim. We got in there once and missed out the other time.
“There’s really no reason why we can’t get in the play-offs. If the squad grows and the experienced lads can help them along, I really believe we can get there.
“Last season the team were right in the mix for a large chunk of the season, but tailed off in February and March time.
“Maybe the team just needed that bit of know-how. That may have given them that last push to get in the play-offs.
“The group will have learnt a lot from last season, there’s no doubt about that," he added.
“It’s a good group of lads here who all have the same ambition. We all work hard but also know when to have a laugh as well.
“I’m not a shouter in the dressing room, but I hope to give a bit of guidance to the lads. If the young lads need someone to talk to about things and just want a bit of advice, I’ll be here for them.”
