The midfielder's arrival was announced this morning, with Bennett on hand to welcome his old Norwich City team-mate to the Senior Training Centre.

The 32-year-old has plenty of experience behind him, having amassed over 500 appearances in his career, and is now looking forward to life in East Lancashire.

“I’m absolutely delighted to be here," he admitted to iFollow Rovers.

"I spoke to a lot of people when I knew I was coming here and they have only said great things about the club.

“There are friends here who I have played with and against before and I’m just excited now and looking forward to getting going.

“Danny Graham sent me a message and said he was hoping that I’d come. I spoke to a few of the lads as well."

And as for Bennett's impact on the move, Johnson says the fans' favourite was crucial in his decision to join the club.

“Elliott Bennett is one of my best friends in football and is someone who has been here for a long time," he said.

"As soon as he found out there was interest he was on the phone straight away.

“We signed together at Norwich eight or nine years ago and have been good friends ever since. He is the godfather to one of my sons.

“We’ve spoke near enough every week for the past nine years and have played against each other plenty of times. Now I’m back with him I’m hopeful of many more great games playing alongside him.

“It’s gone full circle. We started together at Norwich with the dream of playing in the Premier League together. We’re a little older now but we’re back again and are keen to finish our careers here on a high."
