Charlie Mulgrew admits he's pleased to see Tony Mowbray add experience to the Rovers squad for this coming campaign.

In a young squad in 2018-19, Mulgrew was one of the senior figures, alongside the likes of Elliott Bennett, Danny Graham and the recently departed Craig Conway.

The boss moved swiftly to add Championship knowledge to his team, with Stewart Downing and Bradley Johnson being the first two new recruits brought in to Ewood Park.

“I’ve been very impressed with the first couple of signings that we’ve made," the skipper confessed to iFollow Rovers when discussing the duo's arrival.

"It’s brilliant to have some more experienced players like that who have quality and know-how. I’m delighted that they’ve both chosen to sign here.

“You always need players who are quality, know the game and have played at a great level. What they bring to the team is little things that maybe a lot of people won’t recognise.

"It’s the movement, knowing when to run or stand still, knowing when to show for the ball, small things like that. It makes a huge difference to a team," the Scot added.

“I say they’re little things, but really they’re big things in the grand scheme of the game. They make a huge difference, creating a goal by dragging players around, making an angle."
