Tony ready to expect the unexpected

"We’re going to try and win the next game, which has been the mentality for the last two years or so"

Tony Mowbray says he's not entirely sure what to expect of Newcastle United this evening, when the Magpies make the trip to Ewood Park.

Struggling in the Premier League and with Cardiff to visit St James' Park at the weekend, Mowbray says he is weighing up whether Rafa Benitez will make changes to his side.

The Spaniard had a blend of first team players and youngsters in the side for the first clash at St James' Park at the start of this month.

“They’ve just come back from Chelsea and in every other game in the last few months with a back three, so whether they go with that or a back four again, we’ll prepare ourselves for the game," the boss told iFollow Rovers.

“We’re not sure whether Rafa will rest players, play the youngsters or play the first team. At some stage they need to build confidence and win matches, and they might see this game as a chance to do that.

“In most cup matches, particularly against teams from different leagues, it’s tough to work out what the manager is going to do.

“We want to win every game we play, so we won’t be taking things lightly. We’re going to try and win the next game, which has been the mentality for the last two years or so," he added.

“Newcastle have a core of 20 players that play in the Premier League and I can’t see the team being too far away from the first game.

“We hope to have one or two players back. We’ll try and be as positive as we always are. We’ve got a good record at home and it will be a tough game in front of our crowd."
