Rovers Ladies manager Gemma Donnelly is prepared for a tough test from Huddersfield Town Ladies when the pair meet on Sunday.

The Terriers are currently Rovers’ closest challengers, sitting three points behind having played two games more.

Donnelly said: “We’ve had really competitive matches against Huddersfield in the past, so we’ll be prepared for that. I know they will step up their game against us.

“They’ve been notoriously difficult in past years. Last season they were one of only two teams to beat us.”

Rovers have scored 97 goals in all competitions, preserving their 100% record in 2018/19 with a 2-1 victory over Oxford United Women in the SSE Women’s FA Cup Third Round last weekend.

“We want to start off in the league as we finished last year, with a positive performance. I’m sure the girls will be up for it on Sunday.

“They are all aware how important the league is. Our primary focus is to finish top of the table so that we are eligible for automatic promotion."

New signing Serena Fletcher is inline to make her debut for the club on Sunday.

“She’s still a young player but she’s technically sound and can play in multiple roles, which gives us options.

“With her experience of winning the league twice at Liverpool and Manchester City, she’s come to the right team with that understanding of what it takes to be able to perform consistently. I’m excited to see her become part of the team.”

There’s further good news in that captain Lynda Shepherd returns after illness, as does Lauren Davies. Lagan Makin will also be back in the squad after injury.

“We are almost returning to full strength, which is another positive for us. With the competition in the squad, I’m sure they’ll all want to put in a performance on Sunday.

“It’s been a tough first week of training off the back of the festive period. The players are just beginning to find the level of fitness they had pre-Christmas.

“They know the importance of the three points and trying to maintain a starting position.”
