Report: Rovers U18s 1 Derby County U18s 3

Rovers start 2019 with defeat at home to the Rams

22 January 2019

Rovers Under-18s slipped to a 3-1 defeat on their return to league action, as Derby County recorded an eighth straight win in all competitions.

Morgan Whittaker opened the scoring for the visitors just three minutes into the game at Brockhall, before Sam Durrant equalised for Rovers.

But the Rams were not to be denied, as Jason Knight and Connor Dixon secured the points for Derby with goals in the second half.

Derby came flying out of the traps and took the lead when Archie Brown crossed from the left and the unmarked Whittaker had the simple task of tapping home.

Rovers responded well and they were quickly back on level terms thanks to a superb goal by Durrant, who struck an excellent curling effort high into the net.

Derby created a handful of chances to regain the lead, as Knight missed twice in quick succession, whilst Whittaker failed to trouble the target with just the keeper to beat.

Rovers also threatened before the break, as they countered to great effect following a Derby free-kick, with Vilius Piliukaitis knocking the ball beyond Sam French, but Eiran Cashin produced a goal-saving clearance off the line.

The hosts were unlucky again after the break, as James Connollyís header cannoned off the post, before falling into the grateful grasp of French.

Derby capitalised on Rovers' misfortune, as a long ball forward was pounced on by Knight, who chipped the ball into the back of the net with 20 minutes remaining.

And the Rams put the result beyond doubt 10 minutes later when Jack Stretton played in Dixon, who calmly slotted the ball under Ben Winterbottom in the Rovers goal.

Assistant coach Mike Sheron said: "Derby are a good side. They've got some really good players and I think they over-powered us in the last 15 minutes with some good intelligent and purposeful play.

"We were quite content with how the first half went. We had a game last week which was very similar, so maybe it's concentration levels in the second half that we need to work on."
