Development Squad chief Damien Johnson was a happy man following his side's emphatic home victory over 10-man Leicester City at Leyland on Monday evening.

In Rovers' best display of the campaign, the goals were shared around in a magnificent 7-1 rout at the Lancashire FA HQ.

Joe Rankin-Costello got the ball rolling before further strikes from Ben Paton, Stefan Mols, John Buckley, Charley Doyle and a Jack Vale brace sealed a terrific night for Johnson's youngsters.

And speaking afterwards, the Under-23s supremo was thrilled by the performance from start to finish.

"We went down to Leicester towards the start of the season and since then they have been really successful this season," Johnson reflected.

"Alongside their physicality, they have that bit of quality as well, so we always knew it would be a tough test for us.

"We stood up to the physical challenge and there was a period in the game where we had to see things out for 10 or 15 minutes, to be honest.

"Once we settled down, I was delighted with the intensity and the aggresiveness of our play both in and out of possession.

"Over the last few weeks we've moved it well in the wide areas and have been producing those one touch finishes.

"We got two or three goals from the wide areas. It was great to see us score the goals and be clinical when the chances came our way."
