It was an afternoon to forget for Rovers Ladies as their three match unbeaten streak came to an end with a 2-0 defeat away at Leicester City.
An own goal and Lanchante Paul’s second-half strike was enough to see the Foxes take all three points and climb above Rovers in the table.
The Blues were without the likes of Natasha Flint, Rhema Lord-Mears, Kelsey Pearson, Milly Robertson and Danielle Whitham, but Gemma Donnelly’s side went into the game full of confidence following a run of three league games without defeat.
However, it was City who had the first effort on target when James flicked Paul’s cross on target, but Fran Stenson was there to claim.
Annabel Blanchard’s free-kick then hit the upright from 25 yards out.
At the other end Rovers threatened when Jess Holbrook’s cute pass put Alex Taylor through on goal and she forced a smart save from Demi Lambourne.
And from the resulting corner Kayleigh McDonald had her header cleared off the line before a sea of Leicester bodies prevented Natasha Fenton turning the rebound home.
Those missed chances proved costly as Leicester took the lead in a fortuitous manner just before the break. A corner was headed back towards goal once Fran Stenson had punched it away and after coming back down off the bar, Ellie Stewart’s headed into her own net.
Rovers never really recovered from that setback although Holbrook’s cleverly worked free-kick found Taylor, who fired straight at Lambourne.
Another Holbrook free-kick was headed narrowly wide by McDonald at the back post as Gemma Donnelly’s side searched for a route back into the game.
Paul struck wide and over before doubling the Foxes’ lead with just over a quarter of an hour to go. She drove through the heart of Rovers’ defence and finished into the bottom corner.
Next up is Sunday’s game at home to London City Lionesses, 2pm.
