Preview: Rovers v Middlesbrough

A look ahead to this weekend's clash against Jonathan Woodgate's Boro side at Ewood Park

16 August 2019

Greg Cunningham could be set to appear for the first time for Rovers in the Championship when we host Middlesbrough at Ewood Park on Saturday afternoon.

The defender, who played for the full 90 minutes in the midweek clash against Oldham Athletic in the Carabao Cup, could feature against Boro for the first time in the league after arriving from Cardiff City on deadline day.

The left back impressed during his first Rovers appearance and is likely to line up against international compatriots Derrick Williams and Darragh Lenihan, who returned to training earlier this week.

Tosin Adarabioyo is a doubt after picking up a slight knock, whilst newly appointed club captain Elliott Bennett will battle it out for a right back berth with Ryan Nyambe.

Their could be five ex-Boro players in the Rovers squad on Saturday, with Jayson Leutwiler, Richie Smallwood, Danny Graham, Harry Chapman and Stewart Downing all available to feature against the Teessiders.

Tony Mowbray and a number of members of his backroom staff are also former Middlesbrough employees with strong links to The Riverside.

On the opposition side will be Rudy Gestede, with the Benin international frontman finding the net 35 times in 73 outings during his one-and-a-half years in blue-and-white.

Rovers have only lost one of the last eight meetings against Boro and will hope that fine record continues at Ewood.

Jonathan Woodgate's side have so far this season drawn away at Luton Town and lost to Brentford on home turf. They come into the game on the back of a penalty shootout defeat to League Two Crewe Alexandra in the first round of the Carabao Cup in midweek.
