Gaffer satisfied with summer recruitment

Tony Mowbray has been reflecting on a busy summer of incomings and outgoings

Six new faces have walked through the Ewood Park doors this summer, and Tony Mowbray has been left pretty happy with how things are looking in his squad.

After a hectic last three months, Mowbray's strengthened his squad with a number of reinforcements, as Rovers aim to improve on last term's 15th place finish.

Stewart Downing, Bradley Johnson, Sam Gallagher, Christian Walton, Tosin Adarabioyo and Greg Cunningham all bring added Championship experience to Mowbray's youthful camp.

David Raya and Charlie Mulgrew have been the only senior outgoings, and the boss is content with how things have panned out for Rovers over the summer.

“When it’s over you reflect, look at your squad and see where it is," Mowbray revealed to iFollow Rovers.

"I’m pretty comfortable at the end of the window, and sometimes in football there’s opportunities for others.

“Charlie’s departure sees a void in the team and the opportunity is there for others to step in. At the end of the season I saw the combination of [Darragh] Lenihan and [Derrick] Williams do so well for us in the backline.

“They’re both Irish boys who get on really well with each other on the pitch and socialise with each other off it. It looked to me that they enjoyed playing with each other and they both look mobile and are aggressive.

“We’ve also got Tosin in the building, who this week in training has looked very much like a Premier League footballer. We’re excited to get him going and get him involved."

Mowbray now has four months to go with what he's got, and says he's excited to see what the group can achieve during the first half of this term.

“If we have a fully fit squad, which you very rarely do as a manager, I think the numbers and the quality is there and we can have a really good season," he added.

“Time will tell whether we’ve got it right or wrong, but we look forward to the challenge ahead and we go to war with what we’ve got.

“As a manager you have to make tough decisions, but I think we’ll all benefit from the strong squad we have.

“There it is, it’s set in stone now for the next few months and we’re looking forward to it.”
