Gemma Donnelly has praised Blackburn Rovers’ supporters, the club’s One Club ethos and the work of Lindsey Lewis for raising almost £5,000 for her Ladies team.
A JustGiving page, which was set up to raise £250 to sponsor one Ladies player, has snowballed into sponsoring the whole squad and more.
And the Rovers manager has been overwhelmed by the response to the fundraiser.
“It’s amazing how many people have been able to support the Ladies,” Donnelly commented.
“I heard about it through scrolling through Twitter and thought it was brilliant. It had just gone live and over the evening I saw it going up really quickly. Next thing it was on £400.
“I was just blown away with the concept but also how many people were jumping on it and getting involved. I thought it was such a fantastic idea.
“What warmed me was the support from the Rovers fans. I came a bit addicted to waking up in the morning and looking at what we were on. It was just phenomenal how it kept increasing.”
But it’s not just the money itself that has benefitted the team.
“The whole contribution from the fans, Lindsey’s support and generating this media frenzy over the Ladies, I’m in my absolute element because people are talking about us.
“It just forms such a good start to the season with the fans getting involved.
“The amount has not been my main focus. I’ve been reading through the messages below from those that have contributed. And whether it be £5 or £50, what I love is the exposure we’re getting from Rovers fans.
“It’s just unbelievable how everyone has got involved. It symbolises the family feel of Blackburn Rovers.
“I’m eternally grateful for the support from Lindsey and the Rovers fans to be so generous both financially and with their kind words.
“Thank you on behalf of myself and the team and also on behalf of Blackburn Rovers.”
