“They’ve given an excellent account of themselves and they should be incredibly proud”

Gemma Donnelly praised the efforts of her young team after they were narrowly defeated by London Bees.

Nikita Whinnett’s 40th minute goal was the difference between the two sides at Bamber Bridge, but the Rovers boss took plenty of positives from the performance.

“It’s a tough result to take, the girls were excellent,” Donnelly said post-match.

“They gave everything; it just wasn’t quite enough. I thought it might have been the last 10 or 15 minutes.

“We had London Bees camped in their half and they defended like absolute Trojans. But we just couldn’t get the ball in the back of the net.

“Similar to last week I was disappointed to go in 1-0 down. But that was the nature of the game, it was waves of attack from one end to the other.

“We just didn’t deal with the counter and then Dan Hill gets lobbed. We were probably up in terms of the possession.

“We created half chances but we definitely missed Tash Flint and Saffron (Jordan) up top.”

Rovers were also without Chelsey Jukes, Alex Taylor and Rhema Lord-Mears, while Lauren Thomas, who was making her first start since signing from Liverpool in the summer, left the field with a broken collarbone early in the game.

“It’s disappointing for Thommo. It sent our gameplan up in the air after about 20 minutes.

“We’ve had to adapt formation several times and change personnel around, which we did far better than last week. I’m sure it’s the same for every team, we’re not here to make excuses.

“We’ve fielded quite a young, inexperienced team. They’ve given an excellent account of themselves and they should be incredibly proud.

“The likes of Charlotte (Redman) who has come out of the RTC. She’s been put in about four different positions to nullify the threat and I thought she did incredibly well.

“I’m really pleased for Kelsey Pearson coming on and getting some game time. She had 20 minutes after being out for a year and that was fantastic to see.

“She made a real impact when she came on as well so I can’t wait to see her moving forward.

“Overall I’m disappointed but I thought there were loads of positives to take from today.”
