It's certainly been a summer to remember for John Buckley, who's now a firm fixture in Tony Mowbray's first team thoughts following a fine pre-season.
The teenager has gained regular football in pre-season, producing a number of impressive showings that resulted in him being part of the squad on the opening day of the season against Charlton Athletic.
The Academy graduate emerged off the bench for the final 10 minutes against The Addicks, and admits he wants to grab the opportunities with both hands this season.
“Pre-season has been good for me and I got quite a few minutes as well," the 19-year-old said.
"I went to Austria with the team and it was a different experience but also enjoyable. It was hard graft for us over there.
“I feel I’ve done well, so I just need to keep kicking on. I want to get in the squads as much and possible and to try and get starts as well.
“I have to keep training well, training hard and showing the gaffer what I can do. I have to try my best to stand out.
“I’ve seen a lot of people come and go since I’ve been here. I think it’s only me and Jack Evans that have been here since we were six."
Damien Johnson's moved up from the Under-23s - where he nurtured Buckley's talents - to the first team this summer, and Buckley adds that it helps having Johnson on board at the top table.
“I love it here and having Damien in with the first team can only benefit me," he enthused.
"Having worked with him in the Under-23s, I’m used to his voice and his methods. He did a great job with the Under-23s and he’s doing well already with the first team.
“As a young player you need experience, but I feel I can push on and get experience by staying here and trying to get myself in the team.
“I just have to take my chance when it comes.”
