Bradley Johnson was one of the bright sparks on his Rovers debut in the opening day defeat to Charlton Athletic at Ewood Park.

It was a Man of the Match display from the experienced midfielder, who played his part in Rovers' opening goal of the 2019-20 campaign, with his header being diverted onto Dillon Phillips and in to grab the equaliser early in the second half.

Lyle Taylor went on to bag the winner, and speaking afterwards, Johnson was left flat by the defeat, despite Rovers having the better of the play on home turf.

“We’re disappointed, not by the way we played, but the result, which is the thing that matters," the midfielder admitted to iFollow Rovers post-match.

“Anyone can beat anyone, and although we dominated the game, we’re left upset by giving away two sloppy goals.

“We felt we’d go on to win the game once we got the equaliser. We piled on the pressure but they scored from a set play and that gave them something to hold onto.

“You have to take your chances when you’re on top. Goals win you games, particularly in this tough league.

“We can take positives from the game, but it’s about the result, which we didn’t get today," he added.

“We created a fair few chances and on another day the striker gets a tap in or two. It was one of those days for us and we know we need to be better in both boxes for the rest of this season.”
