Joe Rothwell scored his first goal in Rovers colours before picking up the Man of the Match award for his dazzling display against Derby County on Tuesday night.

The 24-year-old was the pick of the bunch on the night against the Rams, opening the scoring in emphatic style late in the second half before Bradley Dack sealed the points in stoppage time.

And following back-to-back starts in blue-and-white, the boss was full of praise for the playmaker's performance against Frank Lampard's in form charges.

“Rothwell’s come in and he’s done very, very well and I’m absolutely delighted that he’s scored,"Mowbray told iFollow Rovers after the game.

“He can be better than he showed tonight. He can go across the pitch at times, but when he straightens someone up he’s devastating at times.

“How fast Joe is with the ball is fantastic. As time goes on I’m sure Joe Rothwell will be a key man in the team.

“He’s taken time to play his position and do his job in and out of possession, but we’ve always known his talent - that’s the reason we bought him.

“He’ll make this club really strong in the future, and it’s about adding experience alongside these young players to go from strength to strength."
