World Homeless Day: Why Kirk backs our Sleep Out

10 October 2018

Blackburn Rovers Community Trust volunteer Kirk Lowe has a very personal reason behind wanting to take part in the fundraising 'Sleep Out for Blackburn' event at Ewood Park on Friday 23rd November.

To mark today's World Homeless Day, he has told us how one of the concept's beneficiaries - local homeless support charity Nightsafe - came to his aid around a decade ago when he found himself sleeping rough.

Thanks to their timely assistance, that dark period is now thankfully only a memory of a past life, with Kirk now working as a qualified photographer and having become a familiar face around the stadium as he volunteers on matchdays to take candid shots of supporters enjoying their Blackburn Rovers experience - photos that can regularly be seen on the Community Trust’s Facebook and Twitter channels.

He will be among the many volunteers raising sponsorship by 'sleeping rough' inside Ewood Park overnight in late November, with just short of 100 kind supporters having already enrolled to support the joint Community Trust and Nightsafe fundraiser.

"I was homeless for quite a while and managed to only have to sleep rough for maybe one night thanks to the help of Nightsafe," he recalled.

"Without their help, I could have been on the streets for much longer. They gave me a bed, some food and water, so I just want to give something back by raising some money for a cause that has helped me out and changed my future.

"I'm now a photographer with a family and children - my life is really good now and it's all thanks to what Nightsafe did for me.

"It's an odd thing for me to be doing something like this again, but I'm in a different perspective now and it's a personal cause.

"Through this sleep out, we can show people that we're a supportive town and that we want to help those who need it. I'm delighted that people are supporting it."

Join Kirk and grab one of the final remaining places to take part in this huge event by using the enrolment form below. Anyone aged 12 and above can take part, with the Darwen End concourse and stand hosting the participants from 8pm on Friday 23rd November through to 8am the following morning.
