Rovers Ladies came from behind to beat Fylde Ladies 3-2 and progress to the Third Round of the FAWNL Cup.

In a thrilling encounter at Accrington and Rossendale College, Saffron Jordan equalised for Rovers and then Natasha Fenton’s free-kick had Rovers ahead.

The game looked to be heading for extra-time after Fylde scored from the spot, before Jess Holbrook scored what proved to be the winner with 15 minutes remaining.

It was Fylde who started the better on the 3G pitch and they scored from the game’s first clear-cut opportunity as Laura Merrin’s cross was turned into her own net by Chelsey Jukes.

Rovers responded well and almost levelled immediately after the restart. Holbrook played a ball over the defence to Natasha Flint, but her shot flashed across the face of goal and out for a goal kick.

Again the long ball worked for the home side, this time Kayleigh McDonald found Flint, whose low effort went narrowly wide.

The striker went even closer midway through the half, but Brittany Jackson was able to parry away her volley from Fenton’s pin point cross.

Rovers kept pushing for an equaliser – Holbrook’s corner was headed wide by Ellie Stewart, before Jackson held Holbrook’s long-range strike.

McDonald then failed to find the target with a header from Holbrook’s free-kick.

After the break it was more set pieces that caused the Coasters problems. Lynda Shepherd rose highest to meet Holbrook’s centre but her header went past the post.

Gemma Donnelly’s side dominated the second half and were on level terms when Fenton’s free kick found McDonald, who headed the ball into the path of Jordan to finish from close range.

Jordan almost had her and Rovers’ second soon after but Jackson was equal to her shot on the turn from just outside the area.

Rovers did take the lead on the hour mark thanks to Fenton’s free-kick from a tight angle which went straight into the far corner.

Fylde found a route back into the game via the penalty spot. Merrin went down in the box and Jenna Carroll made no mistake converting the spot kick.

The introduction of Lagan Makin added some pace to Rovers’ attack and her run almost produced a chance, but Jordan could not get a shot away.

Rovers’ winner came from Holbrook’s cross which deflected and looped over Jackson and into the bottom corner.

The visitors did have a chance to draw level in the closing stages, but there was no one in the box to get on the end of a cross from the right.

The Ladies are back in action on Sunday at home to Morecambe Ladies in the Lancashire FA County Cup, (kick off 2pm at the Sir Tom Finney Stadium).

Rovers: Gibbons (GK), Jukes, Taylor, Shepherd (c), Holbrook, Davies (Makin, 65), Fenton, Jordan, Flint, McDonald, Stewart.
