Preview: Rovers U23s v Liverpool U23s

A look ahead to tonight's encounter at Leyland in Premier League 2

Rovers Under-23s return to league action tonight with a home clash at Leyland against Liverpool Under-23s.

The youngsters are still seeking a first victory of the campaign following promotion to the top tier last term, but recent draws against Arsenal and Swansea and a Lancashire Senior Cup win against Blackpool last week will offer encouragement.

Last time out, Damien Johnson's side suffered a heartbreaking late defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion, whilst opponents Liverpool will also be looking to bounce back, having lost 2-3 against Derby on their last outing.

The Red sit ninth in the standings after eight games, while victory for Rovers could see us move off the foot of the table.

In terms of team news, midfielder Jacob Davenport may well be given some game time in a bid to boost his match fitness after injury.

The teenager appeared against Brighton last week before playing the majority of the clash against Blackpool a few days later.

Defender Tyler Magloire remains a long-term absentee, but Davenport could join Willem Tomlinson in midfield. It's expected that the clash will come too soon for Joe Rankin-Costello, who remains out.

Paul Downing could also feature having played in the cup game against Blackpool, as he looks to maintain match fitness.

Kick-off at the Lancashire FA HQ is scheduled for 7pm, with team news usually released an hour beforehand.
