Rovers Ladies continued their fine start to the season with a stunning 7-0 victory over Nottingham Forest Ladies at the Sir Tom Finney Stadium.

Two goals a piece for Lagan Makin and Saffron Jordan, as well as strikes from Jess Holbrook, Ellie Stewart and Natasha Flint secured the Blues’ victory.

Rovers applied the pressure early on as both centre halves had efforts on goal saved by Rebecca Thomas. Stewart’s half volley was parried away, before Kayleigh McDonald had a long range shot stopped.

Makin opened the scoring after 13 minutes, running onto a through ball down the left and firing it low past the keeper.

Stewart scored the second, heading straight in from Holbrook’s corner.

Natasha Fenton almost scored on her 100th appearance for the club, but the midfielder’s great solo run ended with Thomas saving her goal bound shot.

The first-half chances continued to come. It was pinball in the Forest box when the ball came back off the bar and was then headed over by Lynda Shepherd.

Flint was unlucky not to add to her goal tally before half-time. She showed quick feet in the box and unleashed a fierce strike that cannoned back off the underside of the bar.

Makin grabbed her second just after the restart. Fenton turned provider, crossing for the winger, who finished first-time at the back post.

Jordan was denied by a fantastic Thomas save from close range, but it was soon four for Rovers. A corner landed at the feet of Jordan, who made no mistake this time, tapping in from inside the six-yard box.

It was five a minute later when Holbrook nutmegged the keeper to score after being played in by Jordan.

Forest goalkeeper Thomas was in fine form, denying Makin after Flint showed great strength and vision to pick her out on the left wing.

The goal of the afternoon came courtesy of Flint. She collected the ball on the halfway line and sprinted past the Forest backline before slotting it past the keeper for Rovers’ sixth.

Substitute Eve Kennerley was close to getting on the score sheet but Thomas tipped her effort over the bar.

Jordan completed the rout with three minutes remaining, showing quick feet in the box to work an opening and score her 20th goal of the season.

Next up for Rovers is a trip to Derby County Ladies on Sunday, (kick off 2pm).

Rovers: Gibbons, Jukes, Taylor (Kennerley, 45), Shepherd (c) (Davies, 75), Holbrook, Fenton, (Walsh, 65), Jordan, Flint, Makin, McDonald, Stewart.
