Mill Hill Violets Under-8s received the call-up to watch Blackburn Rovers Ladies train last night, in recognition of their support for the first team.
Maiya Sutton and Amber Lomax, who play for their Mill Hill Juniors team on a Sunday morning, regularly attend home games at Bamber Bridge. And their loyal support has not gone unnoticed.
Along with the rest of their team, they were invited down to Rovers Ladies’ Tuesday night training session at Darwen Aldridge Community Academy.
The girls had a question and answer session with Rovers Ladies captain Lynda Shepherd and were also invited into the gym to mix with the rest of the squad and get autographs.
Mill Hill coach Adrian Lomax said: “It’s an absolutely fantastic experience for all the girls. They’re only young and to actually meet professional women’s football role models has been truly inspiring.
“They’ve seen the real deal. If they have aspirations to be a success, whether it’s in football or another walk of life, it was great to be around the girls tonight.
“Gemma and the team have been absolutely wonderful tonight so I’m really pleased as a coach.”
Rovers manager Gemma Donnelly was happy to reward the girls with a behind the scenes visit to first-team training.
Donnelly commented: “It’s the first time we’ve done something like this. One of our main aims, as well as performing well on the pitch, is to ensure we’re performing as well off the pitch and that’s things that happen behind the scenes.
“The club are working hard to ensure we put right any areas of improvement in raising our profile. And there’s nothing better than getting local teams down to meet the players.
“I’m hoping this is something for the Mill Hill girls to aspire to and we hope to work closely with clubs in the future to increase our spectators at home games.”
Rovers Ladies will soon be unveiling a new mascot experience package that all local grassroots football clubs will be able to register for.
You can see Donnelly’s team in action against Sunderland Ladies at Bamber Bridge F.C. on Sunday 9th December, (2pm).
