Scott Wharton's 2017-18 campaign ended in disappointment as he and Lincoln City missed out on a trip to Wembley Stadium for the League Two play-off Final.

The 20-year-old was an unused substitute as the Imps bowed out after a 3-1 defeat to Exeter City at St James Park in the second leg of their play-off semi-final on Thursday evening.

A first half Jayden Stockley goal put the Grecians in command at the break before a solo Hiram Boateng finish was soon followed up by a belting strike by midfielder Ryan Harley.

Striker Matt Rhead pulled a goal back for Danny Cowley's visitors on the night but that was to be just a consolation as the hosts took one step closer to promotion to League One by booking their place at Wembley next week.

They will tackle either Notts County or Coventry City next week, with the pair doing battle at Meadow Lane tonight.

Since moving to Lincoln in January, Blackburn-born Scott had been a regular feature in their play-off push, appearing 15 times in total and weighing in with two goals along the way.

Wharton will return to Rovers for the start of pre-season at the end of June.
