Rovers’ ground staff have received special praise from the EFL for the condition of the Ewood Park pitch throughout the 2017-18 season.
Whilst Rotherham United took the top honours in League One – being named the Grounds Team of the Season – both Rovers and MK Dons were Highly Commended.
The awards recognise the importance of the quality of pitches for professional football and acknowledge the clubs and their ground staff who consistently produce the best playing surfaces in the EFL.
The rankings are determined initially using marks from referees and away managers for each EFL game and are then followed by detailed pitch inspections and a review of management operations.
A packed fixture programme, brought about by a sequence of successive home games in both the FA Cup and FA Youth Cup, coupled with one of the coldest winters in years, posed problems for Rovers' team of ground staff this season.
But head groundsman, Trevor Wilkin, who has worked for the club for over 35 years, was pleased with how well the pitch stood up to the test and was delighted to receive recognition from the EFL.
"This is a great achievement for everyone involved after what has been a difficult season fixture and weather-wise," said Trevor.
"We had a tough period from late January through to the middle of February, but the winter we had, as everyone knows, was horrendous, plus this season what really hit us was the amount of fixtures we've had.
"I think the last league game of the season against Oxford was our 40th fixture here at Ewood, which is an unbelievable number for this stadium, so overall we're very pleased."
