Rovers defender Charlie Mulgrew will captain Scotland in this Friday's friendly against Costa Rica at Hampden Park.

The decision was confirmed by manager Alex McLeish during his pre-match press conference, as he prepares for his first game in charge.

Mulgrew will wear the armband in the absence of Scott Brown, who has retired from international football, and Darren Fletcher who is not in the squad.

Celtic youngster Kieran Tierney skippered Scotland in Malky Mackay's sole game in interim charge against Holland back in November, but is unavailable through injury.

"Charlie is a natural choice," McLeish told reporters.

"It's for this game, we will see what happens in the next game. We want him to help the young kids round about him.

"Charlie is a good leader and he deserves to be captain."

We'd like to wish Charlie the best of luck and will continue to update fans on his progress during the international break.
