It started out with a discussion about a local gardener, but before the day was out, one former Rover put the stamp on our newest one joining the club.

Joe Rothwell put pen-to-paper on a three-year contract with Rovers on Friday, arriving for an undisclosed fee from Oxford United.

Joe spent a couple of seasons at the Kassam Stadium, and for half the campaign in 2017-18, appeared alongside a familiar name to Rovers fans in the form of Jack Payne.

Payne of course joined Rovers on a half-season loan back in January 2018 from Huddersfield Town, appearing 18 times and scoring once - ironically against a U's side which included Joe in the XI on the final day of last season.

And Rothwell explains how much of an influence the playmaker had on his decision to link up with Tony Mowbray's side.

“Jack actually messaged me the other day asking for my gardener’s number back in Oxford! I ended up having a chat with him and asked him about the club, the people here," 23-year-old Rothwell revealed to iFollow Rovers.

"He spoke really highly about the club, and to be honest, speaking to him made me want to come here even more.

"The club had a really good time last season and I saw what the team were capable of when I played against Rovers twice last season. There is a really good squad here and I saw that first hand."

Aside from getting the approval of Payne, now he's here, what does Joe want to achieve in his first full campaign at Rovers and in the Championship?

“I’m sure keeping the squad together and having a few new additions as well will result in us being a team to be reckoned with. I really to believe that," he added.

“The next step for me was moving from League One to the Championship. I’ve done that now and it’s time to step up and showcase what I can do."
