Rovers are delighted to announce that fans favourite Richie Smallwood has become the latest player to commit his future to the club.

The 27-year-old has signed a new two-year deal, which will keep him at Ewood Park until June 2020.

After joining from Rotherham United on a free transfer last summer, Smallwood's tough-tackling, all-action and wholehearted performances quickly endeared him to the Rovers faithful, who crowned him the 'King of Ewood'.

The midfielder made 52 appearances in an outstanding debut season in East Lancashire, playing a major role in Rovers' promotion-winning return to the Championship.

The Teessider scored three times for Rovers in 2017-18, the last of which was a stunning late winner at Fleetwood Town back in January, which sparked jubilant scenes from the Rovers fans behind the goal.

The former Rotherham man joins Danny Graham, Craig Conway, Darragh Lenihan and Derrick Williams in ensuring his future remains at Ewood Park and we can look forward to more dynamic displays from our number six next season and beyond.

Starting his career at local club Middlesbrough, Smallwood came through the youth system at the Riverside, before turning professional in 2010.

He worked under current Rovers manager Tony Mowbray during his time at Boro and amassed 60 appearances for the North East club.

Following an impressive loan stint at Rotherham, where he won promotion via the League One play-offs, the move was made permanent, with Smallwood becoming a permanent fixture in the Millers' midfield during his three years in South Yorkshire, appearing more than 100 times and gaining valuable Championship experience.

Smallwood spent part of his final year on loan at Scunthorpe United, scoring once in 16 outings, before turning down a new contract at the New York Stadium in order to link up with manager Mowbray again last summer.

Congratulations on the new deal Richie ... long live the King!
