Rovers are delighted to announce that one of our most promising young players, John Buckley, has committed his future to the club.
The talented teenager has put pen-to-paper on his first professional contract, which will keep him at Ewood Park until at least the summer of 2020.
Buckley, who joined the club as a six-year-old, has risen through Rovers’ youth ranks and has played a pivotal role in this season’s FA Youth Cup campaign, which has seen the Under-18s progress to the fifth round stage.
In fact, the midfielder has played every minute of every game in the prestigious competition for Billy Barr’s side, who have knocked out Premier League outfits Watford and Stoke City at Ewood Park in the last two rounds.
Still only 18, Buckley has also made the step up to Damien Johnson's Under-23s side this season, featuring on five occasions, and he produced an accomplished 90-minute performance in the recent Lancashire FA Senior Cup quarter-final victory over Morecambe.
Buckley is delighted to remain a Rover for the foreseeable future and to see all the years of hard work rewarded with a pro deal.
"I'm really pleased,” he said. “I've always wanted this to happen, as I've been at the club for such a long time and have really enjoyed my time here.
"A professional contract has always been the aim for me and I can really start pressing towards getting in the first team now.
"It was probably when I started my scholarship that I really believed I could become a pro footballer. I've always wanted to remain here and develop.
“It has involved a lot of travelling over the years – my dad used to drive me all over the place to get me to games and training.
“It's always been a bit like a routine in my life, finishing school and heading straight to Rovers for training and I'm pleased that my close connection with the club will continue for the next few years."
