Rovers Ladies booked their place in the semi-finals of the FA Women’s Premier League Cup for the second season running with a 2-1 victory over Brighouse Town.
Natasha Fenton’s opener was cancelled out by Lauren Doyle in the second half, before Ria Montgomery struck late on to secure Rovers’ place in the last four.
Rovers started the better of the two teams, but couldn’t take advantage, as Saffron Jordan and Jess Holbrook both went close from half chances.
The opener arrived on 27 minutes as Fenton whipped in a corner from the left, which evaded everybody and found its way in the far corner.
After the break, Rovers should have killed the game off when Holbrook combined with Jordan, but the midfielder’s close-range effort was straight at the keeper.
With 10 minutes to go, Rovers’ profligacy was duly punished when a soft penalty was awarded for the hosts. Danielle Hill saved the initial effort, but the follow-up fell to Doyle, who smashed the ball home.
But with extra-time looming, Rovers grabbed the winner. On 88 minutes, Holbrook’s corner from the right wasn’t dealt with and Montgomery rifled the ball into the roof of the net.
ROVERS: Hill, Pearson, Jukes, Cook, McDonald, Fenton, Shepherd, Holbrook, Jordan, Taylor (Montgomery, 78), Cunliffe (Agger, 64).
