Rovers Under-23s get their Premier League 2 Division 1 campaign underway against Derby County this evening.
The season opener takes place at Derby’s Pride Park Stadium, kick-off 7pm.
The match marks the start of a new challenge for Damien Johnson’s side, who lifted the Premier League 2 Division 2 title last term.
Rovers were unbeaten on their travels in the league last season and will be looking to continue that fine away form in Derbyshire this evening, ahead of exciting home encounters against the likes of Chelsea, Everton, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool in the early months of the campaign.
The Rams finished 10th in the 12-team top flight in 2017-18, just two points above relegated Sunderland.
Johnson’s side head into the new season following some impressive friendly results, which included victories over Clitheroe (2-0), Chorley (1-0), Ramsbottom (3-0), Darwen (5-0) and Burnley (5-1).
After Joe Nuttall’s exploits last season, which saw him finish top of the Division 2 goalscorers charts and earn himself a place in manager Tony Mowbray’s senior squad, the onus will be on Okera Simmonds and Dan Butterworth to produce the goods in front of goal – with both players having hit hat-tricks for the Under-23s in pre-season.
Tonight’s game at Pride Park is FREE entry for all supporters, who are advised to head straight to the lower section of the East Stand upon their arrival. Turnstiles will open from 6pm.
