Rovers lost out to the odd goal in five against Everton Under-18s at Finch Farm Training Ground today.
Despite coming back from 2-0 down against the Toffees, Pawel Zuk struck with five minutes to go to break Rovers hearts.
It was a gutsy display from Billy Barr's boys against title-chasing Everton, who took the lead on 17 minutes after Stephen Duke-McKenna and Ellis Simms combined well before Nathan Moore's cross found Sims, who nodded home.
And two minutes later and the hosts grabbed a second goal as Duke-McKenna fed Korede Adedoyin, who finished cooly by putting the ball into the bottom corner.
Ben Winterbottom did well to deny sims, whilst at the other end, Sam Barnes smashed over from close range in a lively first half.
Whatever Barr said at the break looked to have worked, with Kyle Connell being denied by Nico Hansen and then Isaac Whitehall fired over.
Time was running out for Rovers to get back into the game but they got themselves a chance with 17 minutes to go when Luke Brennan crossed to Connell, who finished first time.
Rovers went agonisingly close to an equaliser a moment later as James Connolly's header was hacked off the line, but they weren't to be denied.
Wth eight minutes remaining that equaliser did come as Barnes flicked a Brennan cross into the back of the net to level things up.
But just as it looked like the spoils would be shared, Zuk drilled home in the 85th minutes to take all three points for the Toffeesm despite a resolute Rovers display.
