Deadline day signing Paul Downing admitted the move to Rovers came out of the blue, but it was one that he was delighted to make.

On a busy day of transfer activity at Ewood Park, the central defender became manager Tony Mowbray's 12th signing of the summer, joining on a season-long loan.

Downing was surprised to receive the call from Rovers, but he had no hesitation in making the move from MK Dons.

"I'm delighted," the 25-year-old told iFollow Rovers after completing the deal.

"I wasn't expecting it this morning when I woke up, but I'm very happy that I managed to get it done.

"I just thought it would be a normal day, I trained at my previous club, went back home and then got the call late this afternoon.

"It was touch and go as to whether it was going to go ahead, then up the M6 and here I am now. It has got done on deadline day and I'm over the moon that we've managed to sort it out.

"I can't wait to meet the lads and get back out there and help the team win football matches."
