Tony Mowbray was delighted with the performance of Paul Downing in Tuesday night's win over Rotherham United.

The on-loan defender made his home debut - his second start in Rovers colours - putting in a strong defensive display to earn a clean sheet in the 2-0 victory.

The manager felt the MK Dons man had the attributes needed to keep the free-scoring Millers at bay and was pleased that his faith in the defender paid off.

"Paul has come in on loan, he is a player I knew from a long time back," Mowbray told iFollow Rovers.

"He was more of a sitting midfield player at West Brom when I had him as a young 16-year-old.

"He is a very sure, very conscientious football player. He probably doesn't have the power or the size of Elliott Ward. So it was a big decision for me to take Elliott's pure physicality out of the team.

"But I did feel that they were quick and lively on the counter-attack with lots of energy breaking from midfield, and I thought Paul was the right decision tonight.

"I've said to Elliott that there are going to be plenty of times where his experience and his physicality is going to be required.

"We are all in it together, we all have a big part to play, all the players. The ones who haven't played as much as they would have liked are going to have parts to play.

"We are just going to have to pick the right team on any given weekend."

Downing and Rovers are back at Ewood this Saturday when Gillingham are the visitors.
