Tony Mowbray will speak to his senior players before deciding whether to play them in this evening's Checkatrade Trophy tie with Bury - kick-off 7.45pm.
The manager has already said that he'll mix up his squad for tonight's second group match, and that could include playing the likes of Danny Graham, who played in the previous Trophy match against Stoke City, and Craig Conway, who has only just returned to full training after a hip injury.
Mowbray will discuss the situation with the players themselves, to see whether they feel their fitness needs are best served playing in the match at Ewood Park.
"The best thing to do is to talk to the likes of Craig and Danny," said the Rovers boss.
"I've never been the sort of manager that says 'you are playing in this game', if they feel they need the game time, if not then they train. They train hard, they work hard, they run hard and they sweat.
"Bottom line, all that matters is when the first team are playing for three points on a Saturday afternoon or a Tuesday night, it doesn't matter what has happened in the past, they have to be fit to play, they have to do their job and compete.
"So if the best way to get to match fitness for a Saturday afternoon is to play on a Tuesday night against a team in the Checkatrade Trophy, then that is the best way to do it.
"Or, if they think they're body is better running around the track, or up and down the pitch, or doing box-to-box running, then we can do that as well.
"But senior players, I show them a bit of respect, and generally don't force them to play in games like this."
