Duo do the double on Ewood's cup final day

18 May 2017

St Bede's and Darwen Aldridge Community Academy both secured a trophy double as the Blackburn and Darwen Secondary School Sports Association (BDSSA) cup finals came to Ewood Park.

On a day when six different schools were represented in five showpiece finals for years seven to 11, three schools managed to claim silverware on a memorable day at their local professional stadium.

Having made the short trip down Livesey Branch Road, St Bede's were the first and last winners on the day as they won the year seven and 11 finals, while the school from the other end of Bolton Road, DACA, took the year nine and ten titles after Queen Elizabeth Grammar School won the year eight contest.

On a damp day in Blackburn, all the teams coped well with the unseasonably adverse conditions, with at least five goals being scored in every game.

Adrian Ward from Blackburn Rovers Community Trust was on hand as stadium announcer throughout the day, and was impressed with the standard on show. He admitted:

"We were delighted to be able to give so many local school teams the chance to showcase their talent at Ewood Park and there were plenty of players in every game who took that chance to the maximum.

"The games were well supported throughout the day and perfectly organised thanks to the planning of Andrew Mercer and Phil Eastwood at BDSSA who help to stage a great tournament every year.

"The finals returned to the stadium last summer after an absence of several years and were a big success when we played four finals back-to-back, so it was a logical extension to add a fifth this year and see every year of high school represented. We hope that it will be a partnership that continues for many years to come, so that we can inspire every local player to try and reach the showpiece event each season."
