Walking football teams sought to represent Rovers

2 March 2017

Over 50 and thought your chance to represent Blackburn Rovers in an EFL competition had gone? Think again!

Any fifty-plus five-a-side team in the borough is being given the chance to compete in a unique walking football tournament at the Blackburn Rovers Indoor Centre, with the winners on the day getting the chance to compete in a nationwide event, created by the league's official charity.

Our qualifiers for the EFL Trust National Walking Football Tournament take place on Sunday 12th March from 2pm to 4pm, and are open to teams of any standard and experience, be it friends who have played together for years or groups who fancy giving it a go for the first time.

Entry is exception value at just £15 for a squad of up to seven players, working out at just over £2 per player, with a guarantee of at least three matches of ten minutes or more in duration. Teams do not need full matching kit, but matching colours are preferred where possible, with bibs provided on the day to help teams avoid colour clashes.

The event will be played under the FA's recently released walking football guidelines, with copies available to teams upon receipt of their entry. As walking football is largely non-contact, it is a mixed gender event, so female players are actively encouraged to get involved.

The winners on the day will then be given the chance to represent Blackburn Rovers in the competition's regional finals - the stage at which we finished runners-up last season - and hopefully the national finals at St George's Park in Burton too, if they can win the regional stage.

To confirm your team's place in the competition, please email adrian.ward@brfctrust.co.uk and provide:
  • Team name (please keep them clean and inoffensive)
  • Team shirt colour (if known)
  • Manager's name
  • Manager's contact email and phone
All teams entering the competition are advised that they enter the event at their own risk, with teams or participants advised to ensure that they have their own adequate medical cover in place before entering the competition. Please ensure that participating players are able to provide proof of age on the day of the tournament if required - players are required to be aged 50 or above on Sunday 12th March.

The closing date for entries is 5pm on Thursday 9th March, with entry fees required by 5pm on Friday 10th March. Fees can be paid in person via cash or card at the Indoor Centre, or card only by calling 01254 508256.

Fingers crossed that your team will 'walk' the tournament!
