Togetherness is key - Whittingham

New signing insists there will be no substitute for hard work in League One

14 June 2017

New signing Peter Whittingham insists Rovers will be forced to grind out results if they want to be successful in League One next season.

The former Cardiff City midfielder, who has signed a two-year deal at Ewood Park, believes it will take a strong team spirit and unwavering work ethic for Rovers’ to bounce straight back into the second tier.

“As it is with any team, I think togetherness is key,” said the 32-year-old, who was named in the Football League’s Team of the Decade at the 2015 EFL Awards.

“It’s everyone mucking in. If you're not having a good 10-20 minute spell, then you all just muck in, you try not to concede and then you are going to have your spell in the game.

“It's a 90-minute game at the end of the day and you are going to have your spell, so it's a case of just grinding out maybe their 15-20 minute spell and scoring when you're on top.

“We're under no illusions how hard it's going to be. It's a really hard league, as is the Championship, as everyone saw last year, but it's up to us.

“It’s League One, it's going to be tough, it's about going to the places where you don't want to go on a Tuesday night and grinding out results. It might be a case of for a 20-30 minute spell you don't play much football, but it's a case of grinding it out and getting the 1-0s that will take you back up.

“It's what we want to do, it's what we need to do and we need to get out of here.”

  • Don't forget, Rovers fans now have extra time to take advantage of the club's price freeze on season tickets for the 2017-18 season.

The great-value Early Bird offer - and claim your seat deadline - has been extended until Saturday July 1st.

With adult prices starting from just £279, it means supporters who buy or renew a season ticket can see all the action at Ewood Park for less than £13 per game.
