Rovers go goal crazy at Bootham Crescent

Rovers found their goalscoring touch with a good pre-season workout at York City.

Four goals in each half gave Tony Mowbray's side a comfortable victory at Bootham Crescent.

Bradley Dack opened the scoring before Corry Evans fired home soon after. Ben Gladwin then ended the opening 45 with a brace of fine strikes.

The early part of the second half saw trialist Paul Caddis net twice, before the fans cheered further goals from Danny Graham and Elliott Bennett to cap an enjoyable evening.

Having played with three at the back towards the end of last season, it was that same formation that was on show as Rovers took to the field in bright sunshine.

Jason Steele returned from a slight thigh strain in goal, with Ryan Nyambe, Elliott Ward and captain Derrick Williams in front.

Paul Caddis and Jack Doyle offered pace down the flanks, with Corry Evans and Willem Tomlinson the bite in midfield.

Up front new boys Bradley Dack and Ben Gladwin were in rotation along with Liam Feeney.

It was the hosts with the first chance inside the opening 60 seconds as Louis Almond fired over. But after Feeney saw a shot deflect over the bar, it didn't take Rovers long to get into their stride.

On 12 minutes a floated ball into the box from Evans flicked off the head of a defender into the path of Dack and he cooly slotted home his first goal in Rovers colours.

Five minutes later and it was Evans' turn to find the back of the net. A superb drilled cross from Caddis found Dack and he pulled the ball back for the Northern Irishman to lash home via a deflection.

It was soon 3-0 as Gladwin got amongst the goals. Playing a one-two with Dack, the ball broke back to the attacker and he fired left-footed into the bottom corner.

Rovers had further chances as Liam Feeney fired narrowly wide and Doyle planted a header just off target, but a fourth was scored just before the break.

Doyle sent a ball over from the left to the back post to where Caddis knocked it down into the path of Gladwin who gleefully snapped up his second of the half.

Rovers made just the one change at the break as Darragh Lenihan replaced Ryan Nyambe, whilst the hosts made four.

And it didn't take Tony Mowbray's side to get back amongst the goals with a fifth on 53 minutes.

Evans slipped a superb ball through to Doyle in the area and he put it on a plate for Caddis to slam home from a couple of yards out.

A ball over the top saw the Minstermen threaten as substitute Simon Hislop broke in on goal but Steele stood up strong to make a smart save.

But in an instance play was switched to the other end of the park with Dack playing a clever back heel into the path of Caddis and the trialist finished with aplomb.

That signalled further changes as Lewis Hardcastle, Charlie Mulgrew, Danny Graham and Peter Whittingham came on at the hour mark. With Elliott Bennett, Richie Smallwood, Joe Rankin-Costello, Scott Wharton, David Raya and trialist Joe Nuttall introduced soon after.

And it was neat approach play that lead to goal number seven being scored on 74 minutes as Smallwood sent Bennett away down the left and his inch-perfect cross was nodded home by Graham.

With six minutes remaining Rovers made it eight with a fantastic long-range strike from Bennett, and they were denied a ninth when Mulgrew's goalbound free-kick was acrobatically tipped over by Luke Simpson.

Rovers are back on their travels this Friday evening when they take on Morecambe.
