Danny Graham was pleased to get the boots back on and be back amongst the goals on Saturday.
Last season's top scorer picked up where he left off with the winning goal in the final seconds of Rovers' opening pre-season friendly against Barrow.
The Rovers striker admits it was a tough test against hardworking opposition, but feels that can only them help in their preparations for when the season gets underway at the beginning of next month.
"We had a great ten days of hard work leading up to it but it is always nice to get that match sharpness which is vitally important to everyone," said Graham.
"You can do all the running you want in pre-season but we always find the games the toughest ones.
"So it was a tough test, they were big physical boys and they were quite fit themselves as well, everyone got 45 minutes which was good.
"It was a good test, everyone has come out of it doing well, and of course it was nice to get a goal.
"Hopefully we can get through these next pre-season games with no injuries and look to build for Southend."
Rovers continue their pre-season preparations this Friday afternoon when they face Sparta Prague in Salzburg.
