Damien Johnson didn't feel the scoreline was a true reflection of the game as the Under-23s went down 2-0 away to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday evening.
After Willem Tomlinson had struck the post for Rovers, Wolves stunned their opponents by taking a first half lead just moments later.
The game remained a tight contest, but with Rovers pushing for an equaliser, clinical finishing on the counter-attack saw Wolves score two further goals to clinch the points.
"I think for large periods of the game we were in it and more than held our own," said Johnson.
"The first half goal was disappointing with it being from a set-piece particularly as it came at a stage in the game where we were on top. Willem had hit the post and we were really on the front foot at that point.
"So it was disappointing to lose a set-piece, we always work hard on being good from them.
"I think 3-0 was harsh on us and probably flattered Wolves a little bit, but that is what happens when you are chasing the game sometimes, you leave yourself a little bit more open and obviously they punished."
